Car culture dominating society is social murder.

Posts are mostly about the US, sometimes focused on parenting.

Trying to write more, would appreciate you reading and giving feedback. https://politicsofcars.beehiiv.com/
Last time I went to a traffic safety meeting, I saw a parent drive by the bus stop holding a phone such that both they and the unrestrained child in the passenger seat could lean and see the screen.

That's hard to do physically while on a bike or walking with a shorter child.

"I'll call into the meeting from my bike ride"

said the coolest people ever, but they were never in my meetings

medical misinformation can be worse bsky.app/profile/snar...
"if a baby isn't breathing on its own it doesn't really want to live and you should let it die" is fucking psychotic.
They WHAT? They said WHAT?!?!

Look I was a lifeguard in high school and college and I guarantee you if I said this about resuscitation of ANYONE being "meddling" I would have been seriously questioned about my future employment.

they didn't know that six year old would grow up to be an urbanist

Yes and I think bsky.app/profile/bett... put it nicer, but as a frequent rider and fan I've emailed complaints about conditions that would be unacceptable in a new car and that i believe put the bus driver at risk of hearing loss. Tap water must be potable, buses need standards.
Urbanists seem weirdly unaware how much screechy brakes & diesel fumes make people hate buses.

Yes, I know electric buses exist. But they can't do long distance routes.

Agreed on the problem and we have the technology for electrifying buses without range anxiety bsky.app/profile/poli...
subsidizing EVs for consumers was a weak policy but all of the same industrial policy goals could be achieved by electrifying all (school) buses.

Good argument that most transit should be using trolley buses or trams, but batteries work better for school buses due to their routes and schedules.

Capital could make money from building off shore wind turbines if the government allowed them to.

Capital could also profit from more EV production. But a more representative government would invest in a lot more transit and reduce the size of capital's greener automotive industry.

That OP was imprecise but there's a correlation of affinity for fascism and disinterest in cutting GHG emissions that's global, not a random US alignment.

Yes minimizing the climate crisis is economically good, but it's not clear current capital owners would be the prime beneficiaries.

I'd add a pedestrian requirement, and transit if it is in the area, to take a minimum number of trips per year. Basically understand everyone you're interacting with on the road, how it feels to cross a busy intersection or sit at a stop while a bus is delayed because of car traffic etc.

would be nice if www.carsized.com/en/ had more older models, "crossover" has become so imprecise even for modern vehicles and it's hard to get a sense of what minivans people mean. They're great for hauling appliances or road trips, but can be so huge themselves.

96% faster? It took 25x as long before?
November 22, 2025 at 1:38 AM
That is, there should be a more general solution to stop dangerous driving by not allow more driving.

Then if speeding is the only risk factor, a driver could take advantage of the super speeder law to still drive with the restriction.

The latter alone highlights the absence of the former.
November 21, 2025 at 9:08 PM
It's a good change, another middle ground is everyone allowed to drive has a speed governor to begin with, and it only pertains to speeding.

Still need to stop people from driving if they engage in other dangerous behavior (texting, running reds, etc).

I've been seriously considering something like that for walking. Do you recommend the insta360? Is there anything you'd look for differently for walking vs cycling?

Free fares for transit are good, and especially for families.

But the idea is stuck between American hostility to non-drivers one side, and orthodoxy developed in other systems where much lower wealth limited transportation policy on the other side.
November 21, 2025 at 6:46 PM
This is a solved problem in terms of engineering and available equipment. But my sense is even most new construction where it would be cheap to fix still has that problem built in. It's gross.
