Hi Everyone. I write poetry and have two pamphlets published by Hedgehog Press: A Triptych of Birds & A Few Loose Feathers and PBS winter selection 2023 Miniskirts in The Waste Land set in Notting Hill '60s/70s. A full collection is champing at the bit for publication.

On #internationalwomensday I’m thinking of all the women who came before me, carrying their heritage in pots and pans, knives and scribbled in the margins of cookbooks. This poem from my @ninearchespress.bsky.social collection, Blackbird Singing at Dusk.
After Chapel the Women Return They are leaving the scriptures of men, the comfort of psalms and hymns and spreading out across the village: a squadron of women in formation, a flock honing in on slippers and aprons, being called back by the hiss of pressure cookers, the hum of Radio 4. There is some wicked magic in the way they peel potato skins; the paring knife loose in the palm, the string-bound handle gripped in the crease, just so. This is the way that women have always held knives, even when knives were stones. The women offer up their heritage to anyone that will acknowledge it, eat of it. They are massing in their kitchens, the smoke of hot lard rising from pudding tins. My mother is checking her own mother’s cookbook for meat timings, the scribble in the margins, bringing her back in a way that prayers cannot.

Have been out & about so unable to participate in this Friday's #poemsabout prompt from @brokenspinearts.bsky.social which is #dawn I can't help having a go though, so here is mine, & I'll catch up with others in the coming days!
8.30pm Dawn is fine, don't get me wrong - it's just that now, so far out from it, it seems a little passe, a fashion that has had its day. At the time I was honoured to see its rising glow inflate the clouds, a blackbird provide a fitting soundtrack. But, at this remove, I consider it just something else to wait for.
