I want to put forth that this callout culture where people are quick to gather "receipts" to destroy people can be directly traced to TERFs.

Callout posts really found their wings between 2014 and 2016 and quickly became the go-to weapon for anyone needing a queer person to shut up. >

Said something accidentally important on my shitpost account that I'm going to post here too. It's as bleak as it is relevant.

"The existence of evidence is not proof. The evidence must do the proving."

On the internet there is a chronic problem of believing that because there's evidence of something, that means the accusations must be true.

Folks have to, have to, HAVE TO start actually looking at receipts and judging if they're actually valid.

You have to be willing to look at the evidence presented for yourself, to consider if you truly agree that it says what the presenter is saying it does. You have to be willing to look at the presenter and consider their motives.

Seeing a huge tweet thread of evidence and judging it valid without even really LOOKING at it, is a failure to yourself. You're letting someone else doing the thinking and deciding for you, and potentially letting someone use you to do harm.

Please. If you see a callout post with evidence, challenge yourself to LOOK AT IT. Challenge yourself to ask "Does this say what the presenter says? What is the context for this? Without any knowledge at all, what does this receipt say to me?"

In the very least, don't let yourself be used by someone else as a vehicle for harm.

Y'know what. I'm not done. I had to learn this stuff, so I should just make this thread extra useful and talk about what kind of things to consider when you encounter callouts.

1) Who is the presenter of the callout?
2) Are they credible? Have they made callouts before? Have those callouts been evidence based or emotion based? Have those callouts been credible?
3) What does the presenter have to lose or gain from the callout?
4) Is the presenter an ex-friend or ex-partner of the target?
5) What kind of language is being used in the callout? Are they specifically trying to paint the target in a negative light?
6) What is the callout trying to accomplish?
7) How long is the callout? How many receipts are listed?
8) Can you check to be sure that all of the receipts are unique and legitimate, or are a lot of the links broken? Is a receipt listed more than once? Was this an accident, or padding?
9) If the presenter is trying to establish a timeline, do the receipts have timestamps? If not, is it weird that the receipts don't have timestamps? (ex: discord automatically records and displays timestamps on messages)

10) Can you be sure the receipts haven't been fabricated? If not, consider what other factors contribute to credibility or lack thereof.
-Is each receipt identical as if they were taken on the same device?
-Do they look cropped or cut up?
-Do any censors block important info?
11) Consider the relevancy of the callout. Did the event happen recently? Did it happen years ago? Does it establish a pattern of behavior in the target, or not? Has the target addressed it, apologized, or dismissed the events?
12) Do the receipts actually say what the presenter says they do? Is the presenter interpreting the receipt in bad faith?
13) Has context been removed from the receipts? ("I think Coolsville sucks"). If so, can you find it?
14) Can you find the receipts in the wild? If so, do they differ from the callout?
15) How are the receipts presented/formatted? Are they easy to read? Are they in a video where they flash by quickly and force you to pause constantly?
