Word of the Day is ‘catchfart’ (17th century): an obsequious individual who sucks up to the boss and always follows the political wind.

@lataco.bsky.social is amazing. And essential.
@lataco.bsky.social first began as a blog documenting local Mexican cuisine. Now, it’s an essential reporting powerhouse to the city as Trump’s mass deportation plot unfolds.

Just watched Marathon Man w/my son. He said "All the President's Men" is next. 😉
As a kid in the mid 70s, I saw Three Days of the Condor, The Parallax View, Marathon Man, and All the President’s Men at the Tower Theater in Sacto….

Early Riser, might you be?
Want a spectacle for free?
Before sunrise you will see
Two bright stars — planets they be.

The brightest one is Venus.
Outshining Jupiter’s light.
Catch both before they’re consumed
By all of morning twilight.

Anyone who's visited the UK knows that the empty shells of monasteries destroyed by Henry VIII still dot the landscape. I've been seeing images of all the U.S. higher ed institutions being financially destroyed now & can't help thinking of what their empty shells might look like a century from now.
Thought that popped into my head today: has anybody written about Trump's dismantling of U.S. scientific infrastructure as akin in its historical effects to the dissolution of the monasteries in England by Henry VIII? It remains to be seen just how big a historic tipping point this will be.
