We have some news to share with you. 🥄

Today we took legal action to challenge our termination, filing an appeal with the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board. We did this because we believe the elimination of 18F violated safeguards that exist to protect a nonpartisan civil service.

Mike Monteiro on how to survive being online. “The first four years of Donald Trump was a continuous panic attack. I’m not going through that again. You don’t have to either. They’re on stage, but you don’t have to be their audience.” [buttondown.com]
How to survive being online
Wee little union sign I painted in 2022, maybe? This week’s question comes to us anonymously: How do we survive being online? Erika and I bought a radio. For…

Does anyone know of orgs or even anyone personally affected by the fires that could use supplies related to early babyhood? Thinking breast pumps, milk bags, teeny tiny clothes.

(Could also be people not affected by the LA fires, just aware of the need there)

What a gorgeous task… My librarian heart has grown seven sizes.
I love @alexanderchee.bsky.social's Bibliomancy assignment — such a great way to encourage exploration of the library, to help students appreciate the value of curiosity and magic of serendipity. I cld see this being ⭐ for first-year composition classes.

I don’t think people understand how devastating the end of net neutrality, and consumer protections around internet connectivity, are going to be. Imagine the situation where you pay for 4 or 5 different streaming services, each with different “exclusives” — but for the Internet itself.

I think everyone who has an opnion, good or bad, about LLMs, should read how @simonwillison.net has summer up what’s happened in the space this year. He’s the most credible, most independent, most honest, and most technically fluent person watching the space. simonwillison.net/2024/Dec/31/...
Things we learned about LLMs in 2024
A lot has happened in the world of Large Language Models over the course of 2024. Here’s a review of things we figured out about the field in the past …

I was able to do some important cookie research yesterday, thanks to two great @archive.org projects: the IA Lending Library and Bookreader Search.

It all started when we went to my parents' house yesterday for Christmas dinner, and my mom pulled out this handwritten recipe for Shape Cookies:

I've been browsing lots of gift guides this week (love em!) & wanted to share one I made with @leaflet.pub!

"Brendan's Perpetual Gift Guide" ↪ a collection of non-trendy gifts, basics that could be great for almost anyone 🎁

I think a nice example of Leaflet canvas pages for visual collections ✨

If you want to piss a toddler off, just have your natural stress response involve involuntary laughter. Really gets them fired up when they’re upset about having bumped their head. 👍

Is anyone talking about regulating internet access as a utility?

I saw the W3C Statement on Ethical Web Principles, and I’m all for it 100%. But even if everyone adopted it, it has little impact without access. Would like to start actively advocating for it possible but am not sure where to start.

📝 New post!

`aria-label` and `aria-labelledby` aren't allowed on divs, spans, and other static text elements out of the box, and *most* screenreaders won't announce them.

Don’t Use aria-label on Static Text Elements
Don’t use the aria-label or aria-labelledby attributes on divs, spans, or other elements representing static/noninteractive text-level semantics, unless you’re also updating roles.
