This is a carbonized loaf of bread from Pompeii, 79 C.E. - preserved for thousands of years in the volcanic ashes of Mount Vesuvius. The baker left his stamp: “Celer, slave of Quintus Granius Verus." Celer is known to have survived the eruption, as his name later appears on a list of freed men.

Hard to believe but 18 years ago, I sent the great Alfonso Cuaron an advance copy of The Shock Doctrine and asked if he might be willing to write a blurb.

He made a short film instead. This is it. Still chills me.

Share with whoever you think it might help.

Hey, while we're talking about erasing history:

In 1949 the US military held its first Aeriel Gunnery Competition, later known as "Top Gun."

The best of the best competed in dogfighting and other skills. The team that won, was the 332nd: The Tuskegee airmen.

So they refused to announce a winner🤡

The Trump admin has cancelled the panels that approve NIH grants, & is also banning scientists from communicating with the public, attending conferences, and hiring.

NIH is the largest funder of biomedical research in the world. This will severely halt the development of many lifesaving treatments.

This is such a nefarious tactic.

The right inspires political violence from their followers, then blames it on the groups they want to oppress, which justifies that oppression and *more* violence, including state violence.
Trump lied, suggesting the killer was an immigrant.

Initially, some Republicans excused Trump's lie as an honest mistake.

Then he doubled down, and they swung into action in insisting his lie was reality, and reality was the lie.

When the “freedom” crowd yell about Covid mitigations - they’re quick to say it’s their right to take whatever risks they want.

When something is airborne & harms others - it’s not that simple.

Which aligns well with the experience that very mild infection can trigger Long COVID just as much as severe.

Brain abnormalities in survivors of COVID-19 after 2-year recovery: a functional MRI study
This long-term study suggests that individuals recovering from COVID-19 continue to experience cognitive complaints, psychiatric and neurological symptoms, and brain functional alteration. The rs-fMRI results indicated that the changes in brain function in regions such as the putamen, temporal lobe, and superior parietal gyrus may contribute to cognitive complaints in individuals with long COVID even after 2-year infection.
