Free Christmas tree recycling at 12 locations around Dublin City.

The trees are used for compost and wood chips.

Ireland's only supervised injection centre has just secured permanent planning permission.

It's good news for Dubliners - now we need to see these facilities spread to anywhere where there is a drug injection problem.

The U-turns on road safety by this government would make your head spin. Lower default speed limits, RSA reform and red light camera pilot all abandoned while deaths and serious injuries are rising.

Feljin Jose: Seán Canney has earned the nickname ‘Minister for U-turns’ – and there’s a reason for that
Here’s a riddle for you: if two wrongs don’t make a right, but three lefts do make a right, how many U-turns make you spiral out of control?

A brilliant new one in Chapelizod opened today.

More of this for #Dublin!

This is good news for several reasons.
First, for pedestrians - there is no safe access right now from Dolphin Road to Davitt Road. No crossing for kids going to GAA training at Good Counsel. No crossing for people going to catch the Luas.
In Drimnagh, the council is rolling on with plans to remake the Suir Road junction. The plan is to start construction next summer on work to make the junction safer for pedestrians and cyclists, and less congested for buses, Luases, and private-vehicle drivers.

"Continuing to build more roads to alleviate congestion, especially in a geographically constrained city such as Dublin, is precisely the kind of failed thinking that has resulted in our capital becoming the 10th most congested city in the world."

Traffic in Dublin has gotten crazy the past few weeks. But the new government is taking money away from public transport projects that could deal with it.

We could have had a new DART station and improved lines at Heuston and Kylemore Road in Ballyfermot. But no. Roads instead.

The Galway Luas will be a key part of Galway Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy (GMATS) and must be added to it during the next review.

In the meantime, preferred route selection can be progressed - moving these plans closer to reality.

📻 I'll be on RTÉ Radio 1's Drivetime at 4:45pm on why a hotel bed tax is a good idea.

Two thirds of EU states have them. Even a tiny 1% charge would raise €12m a year in Dublin City alone - improving the city for tourists and residents alike.

This is an absolute disaster. Taking away money from ready-to-go public transport projects so that they can chuck more cash at new roads.

The exact opposite direction we should be going.

(Plus: the more you delay projects, the more they cost. Every time.)
DART+ South West is shelved until 2030. It has full planning approval since 2024, no judicial reviews and is ready to go but construction won't start until after 2030. A lot of housing around Adamstown and Clonburris built in anticipation of this upgrade.

Four months after it was promised, we finally have the government's transport investment plan between now and 2030. It's bad. Roads are in, public transport is out. A lot of public transport projects being put on the long-finger to make funding available for new roads.

But it's a drop in the ocean.

Car insurance costs are up 9%, yet profits are down.

The way we have set up insurance in Ireland is mad, leading to high legal costs and inconsistent payouts. It leaves consumers paying way over the odds.

Time for some reforming zeal from government!

Car insurance premiums are up 9% - yet profits are down in the sector.

Costs are spiralling within insurance, there's a clear case for government to reform things, but there's just no energy or zeal for doing it.
