This is the great irony. For years experts who study structural inequality have complained that DEI is just corporate window dressing, making only small, if any, impact. Now we are all positioned to defend DEI because it is the new conservative dog whistle for full blown segregationists.
I’m not sure that dei programs are all that effective, but it’s very clear that anti-dei as a political tendency is about keeping workplaces as segregated as possible and excluding black people writ large from certain jobs bsky.app/profile/nste...

The playbook they ran against abortion is now being run against gender-affirming medical care and will be used against birth control. Oklahoma just proposed a bill to limit IUDs this week.

You need to defend trans people's health care like your birth control depends on it.

I was Dr. Squires’ very first PhD advisee. If you ever wonder why I’m mad when folks don’t shout down the bullies in/of academia this’ll give you a sense.

Really proud of this one: me, @anthrofuentes.bsky.social, @cvansickle.bsky.social & Catherine Clune-Taylor wrote a perspective piece for American Scientist on why sex isn't (and never was) binary. It's paywalled but if you are a Sigma Xi member/have a library card/email me you can read it. Why? 1/n
Biology Is Not Binary
How scientists define sex has evolved over the centuries, and the concept is still incredibly difficult to pin down.

New bluesky people. Use alt text. I'm not the first person to say it or the one saying it louder. We do that on this platform to make images accessible. My alt text for images is not always fancy just basic & I employ alt text bots to generate alt text, but I try. You should make this effort too.

I just assume everyone I don't live with- is infected & I mask up accordingly. So far, I have avoided testing positive with this strategy. Up to 75% of folks lie about being positive. Going out in public without a mask on- is just not worth the risk.

I'm starting to get invites to talk about my community engagement + workforce development work over the past few years. I've also been nominated for several committees at the professional level.
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that these recommendations are gaining traction...

…what are you doing to help women and other historically underrepresented minorities in science other than reposting an inspirational graphic or blog post? If the answer is “literally nothing,” that’s perhaps not great!

Friends, I wrote up a quick guide to getting started on Bluesky for folks who are used to old Science Twitter.

Please share it with your folks who are joining. And please let me know if I missed anything or got anything wrong. 🧪
