My favorite thing I've published in the past few years. It's the first poem I wrote in what has now become my second book (very close to being done with a first draft!). Published in August 2023 in @atticusreview.bsky.social. All praise to @alinaetc.bsky.social for a prompt that led to this poem 🙏🏻🥳❤️

it may feel a little like homework, but i genuinely think people should read the lincoln-douglas debates to see what the practical politics of anti-slavery looked like in an environment where the public was neutral to hostile to the question of emancipation

Amid the dumpster fire that is the world right now, it was lovely to wake up to this acceptance from @poetrysouth.bsky.social. 🥳❤️

So Hegseth’s missiles were fired at a boat:

✅ they had no idea where it was going
✅ they had no idea who was on it
✅ they had no established authority to act
✅ but definitely wanted to murder whoever was on it

Everyone involved should rot in prison forever

No, seriously: What's the argument against?
The next Democratic president should declare that the National Emergencies Act and Article II of the Constitution allow him to:

•admit D.C. and Puerto Rico as states
•abolish ICE
•grant citizenship to any immigrant
•disband the 5th Circuit
•expand the Supreme Court

Seriously: Why the hell not?

Maybe this was never the place I thought it was. That image is likely just the selective memory or the idealized version as filtered through a younger, more naive, less aware, more optimistic version of myself. Still, the sense of loss is the same.

I will never tire of saying that Republicans in the Senate had the chance in 2021 to prevent this man from ever becoming president again, and they chose not to do so. We’re in the future they created.

As @maggiesmithpoet.bsky.social says, "The world is at least fifty percent terrible, and that's a conservative estimate," but I have some joyous news: My second book of poems, "Beloved Marrow," is now done, and it'll hopefully find a good home soon (poets, am all ears on your favorite presses!).

Molly Jong-Fast: “I'm going to respectfully push back on this. This is thought policing 101. This is not okay. They are using anti-antisemitism as a cloak. This is about targeting speech. It has nothing to do with anti-antisemitism and everything to do with authoritarianism.”

9/ The tariffs are DESIGNED to create economic hardship. Why? So that Trump has a straight face rationale for releasing them, business by business or industry by industry.

As he adjusts or grants relief, it’s a win-win: the economy improves and dissent disappears.

i honestly have never seen a political leader so thoroughly destroy their credibility so quickly and, on the other side, it is abundantly clear that if anyone can claim a genuine leadership of large parts of the democratic party, it is AOC.
Folks is it good when your own party's leadership in the House is dropping "listen to the women" and MLK quotes on you while swing state members of your caucus are talking about new leadership

I'm so truly honored to have a new poem out in the latest issue of the Sierra Nevada Review. Since I was a kid I've been fascinated by astronomy. We're specs and yet we are also each so very rare and precious. Many thanks to very helpful edits from @patrycjasara.bsky.social and Swati Sudarsan!
