Few people know this: half of the world's energy use is for heat used in buildings and industry.

And almost all of it is from burning fossil fuels.

That's why we need to decarbonise heat if we want to stand a chance of meeting our climate targets.

“We found there’s this perfect one-to-one relationship. If a city increased its road capacity by 10% then driving in that city went up by 10%.” Still one of the best articles on why building bigger roads leads to more driving. What's Up With That: Building Bigger Roads Actually Makes Traffic Worse
The concept is called induced demand, which is economist-speak for when increasing the supply of something (like roads) makes people want that thing even more. Though some traffic engineers made note ...

To be clear, we do have plans for scaling, we just kinda expected more than a couple days notice before getting blasted with a million new users a day.
The team is rapidly deploying fixes and new software to adapt. More servers in the mail.

Electric cars are far more efficient than petrol or diesel cars.

They use a third of the input energy and 6 times less fossil fuels in the UK.

You see the printed black square from a page in Robert Fludd's "Utriusque cosmi maioris" (1617) that represented the nothingness that was prior to the universe. The square is framed by four sentences in Latin: "Et sic in infinitum" (And so on to infinity). #earlymodern #skystorians

A quick version of the same point for the few oil and gas majors that disclose the volume of carbon captured (or have any operational CCS at all)

(An industry-wide version of this would look significantly funnier and I will create this when I have time)
