An 18yo US citizen, surrounded by eight masked, armed agents of the state, taken into custody, not read his rights, not offered a chance to contact a lawyer, proof of citizenship ignored, handcuffed so tightly he later required medical attention.

Profoundly, profoundly anti-American shit.

500 more NG personnel heading to DC according to Hegseth, per direct order from Trump.
Pete Hegseth says Trump has asked him to add 500 more National Guard troops to Washington D.C.

It's unclear why he seems to be smirking throughout much of this.

They were there because if they had a refused a lawful call up order--which at the moment this is, pending SCOTUS' ruling in Illinois v. Trump--they would've faced court That's why those WV NG were in DC, just as DC NG are also on the streets right now.
What everyone should be asking, especially in WV.

Why were they there??

Me: No, you're not.
DHS: Your premise is shockingly dangerous!

It could just as easily have been DC NG, which DC Mayor Muriel Bowser does not control. Trump's pretextual misuse of NG personnel nationwide is bad, but right now I'm thinking about 2 families of WV NG members who just lost their husband/brother/kid the day before Thanksgiving.
An enterprising Democrat in WV would pin this on the governor who allowed his NG to be mobilized by Trump for no good reason.

FDR engaged in similar coercive tactics against his interventionist policies (Lend Lease, etc) but what Trump is doing goes well beyond that pre-WW II episode.

DHS claims they’re only deporting “the worst of the worst.” As my colleague @davidjbier.bsky.social shows with real world data, it’s a lie. It’s an honor to work with him. 😎
NEW data I've received: Just 5% of people detained by ICE since October 1 have had violent criminal convictions, 3/4 had no criminal convictions at all. Most "criminals" had immigration, traffic, and vice offenses. Not the "worst of the worst"...
