New report finds current Dutch agricultural system has *costs* society €5.3 bn each year 😱
By moving toward sustainable practices, reducing production and consumption of animal protein, and scaling down production to farm within planetary boundaries, a net *gain* of €5.3 bn could be achieved.

#COP21 As part of their national emission reduction plans submitted under the #ParisAgreement, very few countries foresee action on diets. Yet, on top of boosting people’s health and wellbeing, healthier diets could significantly bring emissions from #FoodSystems down… A missed opportunity!

The @ec.europa.eu will present the first part of the #BiotechAct in December.
Aiming to facilitate “innovation” (understand: technological innovation), it will include some food-related elements, including some linked to the functioning of @efsa.europa.eu … To be monitored *very* closely

🤔 Curious about the "beautified" version of the @ec.europa.eu's work programme for 2026...
🤩Imagine it were one with all the missing initiatives (policies to promote healthier diets, animal welfare...) and without the deregulation 'omnibuses' ..
(🙃 it's just the same with a cover page..)

This 🇩🇰 dairy farmer, Torsten Wetche, tells the #PlantFoodSummit audience how he maximised food production on his farm — and that’s *not* by raising more cows and intensifying production.
He chose to have fewer cows, raised on grass, and diversified production to grow plants for food — not feed.

This slide makes a stronger case for diverse, plant-rich diets than any table or graph ever could 😋

🫘 🫛 Pretty unusual to hear about the “history of beans” in an EU agrifood event.
But beans (and other legumes) are the stars of @eu2025dk.bsky.social’s hosted Plant Food Summit!

Public canteens have *huge* (and under-exploited) potential for #FoodSystem change.
Today, the EU Commission’s Joint Research Centre released criteria for sustainable food public procurement. Sadly they’re not mandatory, but local authorities can use them to unlock the power of the public plate! 🍽️

“Legislative and regulatory self-restraint” 🙄
A document obtained by @politico.eu shows EU leaders will be calling on the Commission not to bring in any new laws… except for dismantling existing ones of course (no restraint on “omnibuses”!).

… 😁 now that this post got your attention, please consider joining your voice to the citizens calling on the EU to protect them from toxic pesticides — instead of watering down the laws that keep our food safe. The consultation closes on 14/10!

Pondering whether to break my X/Twitter abstinence to LIKE this post by German MEP Peter Liese. The #VeggieBurger ban is so ridiculous… While EPP like to pride themselves on common sense, today’s vote was far from demonstrating it….

And how the long answer starts. Perhaps this EU lawmaker should give the @eea.europa.eu #EuropesEnvironment2025 AI assistant a try…?

Here’s the short answer:

While attending #EuropesEnvironment2025 stakeholder event today (where all speakers keep stressing the interconnection between climate, biodiversity, water etc. but also social justice), I tested the @eea.europa.eu AI assistant with the following Q 🤓👇

“Producing more with less” was yet again the prevailing narrative at yesterday’s informal #AGRIFISH … 🙄
But more… of what?
Good to see @politico.eu journalists bringing facts and nuance to this discussion - and showing what’s really behind this #FoodSecurity rhetoric.

The @ec.europa.eu work programme for 2026 will be published on 21 October 👀👇

Nice to see some journalists aren’t buying into Big Meat’s strategy of doubt….
H/T @politico.eu!

Food and feed safety rules are next on the list of EU laws to be “simplified” by the @ec.europa.eu — with a broad consultation coming soon.
Genuine simplification or deregulation in disguise…?

Yet another @ec.europa.eu public consultation quietly dropped over summer…
This one’s on the future EU Cardiovascular 🫀 Health Plan.
But the call for evidence says it will “align with the Vision for Agriculture and Food” — probably not much ambition on the diet front… 🙄

Doesn’t mean that efforts to promote physical activity should be minimized, but the study calls for regulating #FoodEnvironments to maximize benefits of increased calorie availability without promoting a nutrient-poor, obesogenic diet.
