I just heard a guest say on MSNBC that Trump likely doesn't have a case in his Wall Street Journal libel case unless he gets Judge Cannon. Everyone nodded and agreed. And it struck me that we've now reached the point where brazen corruption is just expected and accepted as a part of civic life.

They suck and are useful for very specific purposes, if heavily supervised by a human with relevant expertise
There are a lot of critiques of LLMs that I agree with but "they suck and aren't useful" doesn't really hold water.

I understand people not using them because of social, economic, and environmental concerns. And I also understand people using them because they can be very useful.

Thoughts?

It’s unclear exactly how many citizens have faced the Trump administration’s dragnet so far.

The government does not release such figures.

Neither Border Patrol nor ICE would tell ProPublica how many Americans have been mistakenly detained.

Federal immigration authorities have a history of wrongfully detaining U.S. citizens. Advocates warn that the Trump administration’s immigration policies mean that more citizens will get caught up in…

Tomorrow’s going to be a good stress test of the press. El Salvadoran President Bukele will visit the White House. At the press availability, every Q ought to be about Abrego Garcia: where is he now? Did US ask you to return him? etc. WH will hate, maybe try to prevent, so all should band together.

once you have enough money that it no longer matters in material terms and serves only as a scorekeeping device, you have too much money
Part of the problem is that these folks have genuinely bought into the great lie of capitalism, which is boundless growth.

They measure themselves against an imaginary future of infinite wealth that their current wealth is competing against.

By that metric they are losing, and they want to WIN.
part of what makes the current moment so infuriating is that these people had about 99% of everything they could have ever wanted and found the rules preventing them from acquiring that last 1% so onerous that they’re risking the entire system that created their wealth

We've heard concerning things about the Social Security Administration lately, so I decided to check for myself.

SSA says Wednesday is the best day to call, so I called then.

Their system told me there would be a two-hour wait time, told me to call back, and then just hung up.

It's not knee-jerk. It's an environmentally-destructive technology designed to fetishize idea over effort and excise artists from art in order to make techlords richer by plagiarizing pre-existing material made by *actual* creative people and not quote-unquote "prompt engineers."
I get the knee-jerk reaction against generative AI, especially with how much of it gets wrapped up in the whole Silicon Valley tech-bro culture.

But I fear we’re seriously missing the mark in writing it off entirely like this. There’s a ton of creativity happening with advanced prompt engineering.
I get why techbros and their ilk like gen-AI: artists and writers to them are just an obstacle to be bypassed. But I'll never get an author/artist/musician who uses it. "I want to be a writer." No you don't. You fetishize ideas but hate the work. You don't respect the craft or its practitioners.

If Trump issued an Executive Order requiring all newspapers to send articles to the WH for review before publication, would newspapers report it is a “requirement” or “mandate”? Or would the fact it’s preposterously illegal and unconstitutional make right into the lede and headline?
