It's Day 1336 of Russia's full invasion, but that only started because the world didn't provide a deterrent almost 12 years ago when Putin first tested the west's response by invading Crimea

The west failed the test. Are we about to fail the biggest exam too?

This is absurdly great, but I haven't read a single news article about it. A fully open source, offline-first alternative to Notion that's a collab between the French and German governments because they want to host docs securely and on their own terms. THIS is what Europe should be doing.

What is the origin of the word "mainframe"? Digging through archives, I traced it back to 1953. The IBM 701 computer was built from "frames": power frames, a storage frame, a drum frame, and the main frame. This 1953 drawing from the Installation Manual shows the dimensions of the "main frame". 1/n

Occasional reminder that there’s no, “it’s too late, its over” for anthropogenic climate change. Every molecule of CO2 that doesn’t go into the atmosphere makes a difference. Preventing 0.1 degree of warming makes a difference. Every bit of climate resilience we build together makes a difference.

So, the other day I started to whisper and my wife asked why I was whispering? I told her I didn't want Mark Zuckerberg to hear us.
I laughed.
My wife laughed.
Alexa laughed.
Siri laughed.

I recommend no fewer than 4 copies of any beloved book. A paperback for traveling and lending to friends, an eBook for reading with greasy snack fingers, an audio book so you know how the characters' names are actually pronounced, and a pristine hardcover to be buried with you like a pharaoh

Thus, in the online echo-chamber, people rage against the corporate machine, where everyone knows health insurance kills patients for shareholder profit.

In the real world, journalists get out of the bubble.

Hm. I was hopeful the level of discourse here would be more civilised and nuanced but all that crappy communication style with folks falling all over themselves to angrily express outrage and tear people down has been more than a little disheartening. There are real humans here. Let's remember that.

Data showing the top 16% of remote workers outperform the top 5% in-office, while the bottom 12% underperform the bottom 5% in-office, makes sense.

Top performers thrive with extra time from no commute, but underperformers struggle without oversight. RTO penalizes top talent for others’ inability.

Shaming folks that stay in X isn't right. There are a lot of reasons people may need to be there, even if they would want to delete their accounts long ago. Now that we have critical mass here, the migration should be fueled by making this place as welcoming as we can. Not by degrading others.
