I realize at the end of the day that trek shows are written by Americans for Americans but the Trek premise of cosmopolitan crews really falls apart for me when all their earth cultural references are only whatever an American audience would recognize.

It's like imagine having a trek character born and raised in India who is presented as loving cinema and then you only ever make him talk about Hollywood movies. No mention of Bollywood whatsoever.

Don't get me wrong, Patrick Stewart is a fantastic actor. However:

1 - every time they make him speak French, he is unintelligible.
2 - I don't have an issue with a french theatre buff enjoying Shakespeare but the fact he never ever quotes Molière, Corneille or Racine is nonsense.

people talk about Kingdom hearts like it's a complex lore puzzle that must be resolved by gathering all its scattered pieces.

But every time I see footages of those games I'm like, this is just poetry, y'all. This is Nomura's awkward but heartfelt poetry and you're treating it like a wiki entry.

Sequence breaking in Dread is an afterthought. The game obsessively closes paths behind you to keep you on the path while having a map full of teleporter spaghetti and chase segments that are annoying to backtrack through. There's like 3 sequence breaks left by the devs and 2 of them are worthless.

I understood why the old prime games would have trouble with the freeform exploration aspect being in 3D graphics that aren't over a bunch of building blocks but at least that had the atmosphere down. Mostly.

Every game made afterward seems to consider this lonely exploration design an anomaly. Even Zero Mission can't help but tell you where to go. Most games after Super have a very hostile reaction to trying to explore out of sequence if they don't outright forbid it.

Super Metroid was fantastic because it throws you alone in a world with very little instructions, a vague objective, and lets you explore. There's an expected sequence yeah but the various hidden powers Samus has allow to explore the environment in almost any order and the game always accepts it.
