Any guesses on how long an R1 institution will remain an R1 if leadership cuts GA positions? 🤔

If we manage to rid ourselves of MAGA and Trump, I’d be super curious to learn how the @altnps.bsky.social set up their communication signals and network. Not my regular line of research but this definitely a great example of breaking rules for all the right reasons.

Today, I got to revisit this line while making final edits to a chapter of an intro to public administration textbook started before COVID- “…the purpose of public organizations is to address public concerns and should not necessarily sacrifice the quality of activities just to save money.”

The last few days have been incredibly sad and frustrating. I knew that folks that worked for the federal government or relied on grants were likely on the chopping block. Having it become a reality is sad and knowing it isn’t over yet is enraging.

Start poaching. A decent portion of the US has made it clear they don’t value our work.
Seriously though, overseas unis and private industry are about to start raiding the American academic researcher pantry, aren’t they?

US reps and senators have different online forms. A case request is one. The fun part is that you can specifically call out a problematic govt dept. Like you can have a problem with the current DOE for allowing Musk to access your info and also asking why they aren’t doing PSLF and the buyback.

In case anyone needs a reminder about the significance of federal dollars for states.
Emerging Republican federal budget proposals could cut funding for essential services, forcing states to pay more or reduce health care, education, and food aid—harming millions and straining local budgets. www.cbpp.org/research/sta...

I was to give a talk at a big US Attorney's Office next week abt the complicity of German lawyers in the creation of the Nazi state. Yesterday the Justice Department cancelled it.
Irony is dead.
I've got an op/ed on this I'm looking to place. Help appreciated.

Yeah Walmart lists a dozen locally for $4.28 and Trader Joe’s is at $3.59. Considering bird flu is ravaging flocks and someone is on a warpath against science, this is going to be a bumpy ride.
Egg prices are at a two-year high.

So you know, NOAA space weather forecasters are generally furloughed in a government shutdown. Pour yourself a stiff drink, take a look at what’s coming around the Sun in a week or so, and google “Carrington Event.” Then pour yourself another drink.
Yesterday, a *significant* coronal mass ejection erupted from the back of the Sun, with an estimated speed over 3000 km/s. If Earth-directed (and correctly-orientated) this would have had potential to cause one of the largest geomagnetic storms of the past few decades! Fun! (1/4)
