Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

WANT: wooden high-rises, like this academic building in Toronto. Better than steel-and-concrete in nearly every way — including smell.

(I just learned about them via @clivethompson.bsky.social's terrific newsletter.)

If you swapped 20 or 50 or all genes in a H. sapiens baby for #Neanderthal DNA*, you would still not have a Neanderthal in either a behavioural or ecological sense.
They were more than their genomes.

16 years ago, I found myself in the back garden of a couple I'd just met, as they showed me their pillow fighting arena. The lesson they taught me about games - especially competitive ones - has stayed with me ever since, but I forgot to mention it in interviews when asked if competition is bad. So:

This continues to be the biggest story in the country: DOGE has already squandered half a trillion dollars in 6 weeks. Not billion. half a trillion, $500 billion talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/irs-p...

This part of the Tufts declaration somehow warms my heart the most: a full-throated defense of Rümeysa Ötürk's op-ed criticizing the Tufts president, signed by the Tufts president! This is how it's supposed to be!
"The University declares that this opinion piece was not in violation of any Tufts policies. Further, no complaints were filed with the University or, to our knowledge, outside of the University about this op-ed."

A reminder that calling out Israel about their genocide of Palestinians is NOT antisemitic.

I'm Jewish, and I think it goes against Jewish tradition to *not* call it out. "Zachor" (remember) and "never again" are phrases used by Jews specifically about the Holocaust. Yet here we are.

Trump’s regime could disappear tomorrow and it would take years to rebuild what they’ve destroyed in just two months. It will take generations to rebound from the damage Trump and Musk will have inflicted in a year, two years, or ten years of pillaging.
About once per day, I have a thought like "even if the U.S. snapped out of this madness, impeached, tried, and then frog-marched Trump to prison starting tomorrow, we've still set back this country and possibly the world by a generation and perhaps doomed the planet." Not great right before bed!
