Fifty years ago today, the Stanley R. Mickelsen Safeguard Complex at Nekoma, ND, became fully operational, defending 150 Minuteman III ICBMs at Grand Forks AFB with 30 Spartan and 70 Sprint antiballistic missiles—armed with 5-Mt W71 warheads and 1-kt W66 enhanced-radiation warheads, respectively.
