Yeah, Gridlife does sound a lot like Styx's Kilroy Was Here, but I mean, 🎶it was the 90s🎶 so pretty much everyone had a cyberpunk project.

In the end, Gridlife is released, Ray goes on a promotional tour, reveals that he knew Rosalind was really Ruth the whole time, and Ruth and Ray's manager, who have been dating (and fucking almost every time they're both in the same scene) the whole time, watch together as Ray takes the stage.

Portraying Ray as a manipulator who took advantage of a young girl's dreams and aspirations, she claims to have taken "Rosalind" under her wing and produced Rosalind's hit single, "Flame," which she says Rosalind write (despite it being the song Ray sent her).

Ray sends "Rosalind Nathan" (Ruth's alias) a demo of one of the songs from this rock opera, "Gridlife," which Ruth (as Rosalind) records a cover of the song and produces it as "Rosalind's" producer. At the same time, under her own name, she starts writing a column about the "Porno Pen-pal" scandal.

Anyway, Ray is inspired to work on a rock opera about a cyberpunk future where the main character rebels against the companies controlling the flow of information. "The Grid provides facts, but facts don't always provide the truth."

She does so by writing fanmail to him under a pseudonym, pretending to be a teenage girl with rock star aspirations. As part of this, she sends him a nude photo of herself as a teenager, the creep factor of which becomes a plot point that is later handwaved away.

Psychoderelict is WILD. The story is that aging rocker Ray High (real name Raymond Highstreet) has been burnt out for years and his producer, stressing about finances, turns to music critic Ruth Streeting to vent, and she promises to get Ray writing again.

Somehow I forgot that Shel wrote A Boy Named Sue, but in retrospect it's got his fingerprints all over it.
