I was lucky enough to have an econ teacher in HS who was a secret Marxist, and when he explained to us that Money=Debt Obligation, it brought sooooo much of the world into focus
Capitalism runs on debt. Any time you wonder why something is what it is, it leads back to debt. The reason dems never do anything significant with healthcare or student loans or predatory lending is because it capitalism *literally* can not function without these things.

The logic of neoliberalism includes the idea that the only function of government is to protect the free market and private property.
It’s not contradictory that the only thing they want to fund is military and police and the intelligence agencies. It’s explicitly part of what neoliberalism is.
