St Peter's Church, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland in North East England, pictured on a wet November evening. The building's west wall and lower part of the tower date back to AD674, when this location was part of an early Benedictine monastic site.

@adsimpson.bsky.social Did The World of Shakespeare over the Christmas period last year and would like to do another of your puzzles this year. Is there a full list of titles online somewhere?

Did you watch The Hack? I can't believe papers have gotten away with destroying lives for so long. That's why I've signed the petition, set up by Hugh Grant and other phone hacking victims, to demand fair, independent regulation. Join me: you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/a-...
A Free Press, Not a Free Pass – It's Time for Fair Regulation
For too long, the UK press have bullied people, harassed grieving families, and destroyed lives, all to sell papers. We’ve all seen the heartbreaking consequences. They’ve hacked phones, listened to ...

What a pleasure it has been following Jo, and both Turtle and Mrs Turtle, on their travel challenges. I wish all the best to them and Mrs Jo especially.
And finally, as I’ve hinted, because of exciting things happening in my family in December, there’s going to be a Travelling Turtle hiatus. For everyone who’s been part of the fun, from #Bus24 to #Schengen200, thank you! It has been a big privilege to do something others get vicarious pleasure from.

I’ll never get how ‘actual’ YouTubers cope, but it’s been lovely being accosted at stations, pubs, theatres, etc. My poor boss now often starts meetings with ‘Does anyone want to tell Jo they like his travel threads?’
Thanks for it all. It’s not the end, just a v v exciting break. #Schengen200

¡Allá! La Restinga (La Laja bus stop) on the island of El Hierro, the end of the longest point-to-point journey you can make in the Schengen Zone by surface public transport. 5650.2km from Vardø Havn. 192hrs 31 mins. Now excuse me while I go and find my room and shower and I’ll be back. #Schengen200

Monuments and tributes to those lost defending the strategic heights near town and the citadel here are everywhere. The sombre eyes of gigantic soldiers bore into the town. The tricolours everywhere a call to remember the glory and sacrifice of France… #Schengen200

Misty motorways give way to misty minor roads as we weave around and over the fjärds of the High Coast. Not a typo - a fjärd is a flooded glacial depression, a fjord normally has cliffs and is more glacially carved (whisper it: quite a lot of Norwegian fjords are actually fjärds). #Schengen200

Arriving in Gällivare, junction for the Inlandsbanan, a sporadically open backwoods line south. The summer passenger service is some experience: it’s the only train I’ve taken which stops for some passengers to go skinny dipping in a wild river, and to visit a mosquito museum in a bog. #Schengen200

The diversion off the main road to serve Björkliden station (where no one departs and no one arrives) nets us a great view over the immense, 70km-long Torneträsk lake. RAF bombers heading to Tromsø to sink the ‘Tirpitz’ rendezvoused over the lake, a bit of a no-no given 🇸🇪 neutrality. #Schengen20

We pull into isolated Øksfjord (øks from ‘axe’, not ‘ox’, apparently). In 1941 the Norwegian Navy landed here in borrowed British destroyer ‘Mansfield’ to briefly show the flag and blow up a fish oil factory. They left with the citizens standing on the pier singing the national anthem. #Schengen200

I like that Hammerfest’s Wikipedia page has a section titled ‘Reindeer problems’. Apparently, they invade town each summer, causing hygiene issues. The council has built a 20km fence round town, to no avail. Reindeer (including my friend here) have no use for your fences, western man. #Schengen200

In 1802, with the Kingdom of Denmark and Norway allied with Napoleon, the Royal Navy briefly occupied Hammerfest, taking the church’s offerings box. Compared to what the Wehrmacht did later, that’s small beer, but still - not playing the game, lads. #Schengen200

While the BBC was defunded 38% 2010-24, and as a result, #BBCWorldService is cutting jobs, the Russians are advancing.
