especially at public universities, the breadth of culture that a randomly selected freshman has been exposed to varies wildly - i would guess maybe the top 5-10% have familiarity with at least a few major western philosophers but in some cases, they might be hearing about TS Eliot for the first time

This basic difference in responsibility is the problem with this sort of line from the early Trump era: republicans can fight for fighting’s sake because they don’t have to say true things or improve anything. they’re allowed to waste time and shove crayons up their nose

actually the GOP reached its current ascendant position in American politics by "fighting for fighting's sake" and opposing every Democratic proposal as a bloc even when they had no hope of defeating it, hope this helps
