Up and down the coast we're all looking to make waters safer for whales and all other marine life. Really great to hear about the people volunteering their space, time, and effort to monitor marine mammal activity. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/... #marineLife #ocean #westCoast #whales
B.C. residents host whale detection devices on their properties in bid to protect animals | CBC News
From infrared thermal cameras to hydrophones, these B.C. residents offered up space on their properties as researchers look to help safeguard marine mammals.

So glad this is finally out. The method has been instrumental in allowing us to compress the AllTheBacteria data - ~2 million bacterial genomes shrink from 3Terabytes (gzipped) to 100Gb using phylogenetic compression. Great work by @brinda.eu

Researchers say oxygen is being produced on the ocean floor. The mining company funding them isn't happy | CBC News
The discovery of oxygen being produced on the ocean floor — apparently by ancient lumps of metal — has put the scientists behind the landmark study at odds with the Canada-based mining company that funded them.

Was just thinking on this again. I've found that's specifically trying to use #mamba through a script that causes problems. Specifically calling #conda works okay. 🧪🖥🧬🔬🌾
Anybody else roll those dice by activating conda environments from within their bash script? Seems to have worked pretty well for me so far. Only failed today for the first time while running the tool bismark for methylation calls. 🧪 💻🧬 #bioinformatics #genomics

One of our cats had a visit to the vet recently. The doctor asked us to monitor their breathing to get an idea whether a heart murmur may be a problem. I took that "just check once a week" and turned it into full data collection and analysis.

Woo hoo! Just like that, for the first time in my career, I've gone the whole distance from extraction to actually doing the NGS run myself. Wasn't so bad :S Now time to keep on going, time to do the analysis! Wee! 🧪🔬🌾 #agronomy #genomics

Hey microbiome people, here's yet another feed to add to the list: MicrobiomeSky!

At this stage anything with "microbiome" or #microbiome will be included. Enjoy!

How big were the Aquarian Foundation's gun forts? Hard to know an average size, tbh, because they were built in many styles! This stone one I'm crouched inside was only about 1.5 m wide (inside), but there were 2 types of wood forts, & a possible dugout fort, for which we we have no sizes (yet 😉)🏺

I've just learned my article was included in an upcoming OER archaeology 🏺 textbook chapter about pseudoarch (written by someone who I've learned a lot from over the years)! Very cool 😊

Fun fact: this article was labeled as "controversial" in the archaeology subreddit 😅
If you want to learn more, I wrote this a couple of years ago. I'm also wrapping up a much more in depth paper focused on a few case studies of extremely violent white suprms. and how they value pseudoarch + use it as a recruiting tool 😬

Broad question to the agronomy, bioinformatics, microbiology communities, has anyone previously attended the Plant and Animal Genomics Conferences? Is there much microbial genomics representation within any sessions? Interested in attending PAG31 and curious about what microbio might be there. 🧪🌾🔬

Lots of new folks here (welcome!), so it's time for a re-introduction! I'm a historic and contemporary archaeologist. My research explores the archaeology of conspirituality, as well as the use of archaeology and pseudoarchaeology by North American far-right individuals/groups 🏺

After a great day getting to be @cultarchaeo.bsky.social's assistant I'm still thinking about how almost 100 years ago there was a cult near by that started with a message of self improvement and bettering each other and descending into hate and paranoia.
