One of our cats had a visit to the vet recently. The doctor asked us to monitor their breathing to get an idea whether a heart murmur may be a problem. I took that "just check once a week" and turned it into full data collection and analysis.

Woo hoo! Just like that, for the first time in my career, I've gone the whole distance from extraction to actually doing the NGS run myself. Wasn't so bad :S Now time to keep on going, time to do the analysis! Wee! 🧪🔬🌾 #agronomy #genomics
Photo of the screen on our MiSeq next-gen sequencer at the Applied Genomics Centre. The MiSeq is a blocky device about one metre cubed, very heavy, and it's casing is that rough or pebbly surfaced plastic. Its screen is about 15 inches and is a regular LCD touchscreen. It's displaying a little diagram of itself with a prompt reading "Run completed without errors."

I mean, it's not surprising. It was literally a cult and they're gonna do what they always do. But getting to physically be there and stand in front of the remains of one of the literal gun forts they built just really leaves an impact.
A photo of the remains of one of the gun forts built by the Aquarian Foundation in the 1920s-30s. It's a dug pit surrounded by piled up, unmortared stones in a circle. It's about 2 metres in circumference and stands about 70 cm tall and the interor of the circle dug about 20 cm into the earth. There's an entrance to the gun fort at one point so from above it looks like a "c". The gun fort sits in the middle of the forest with a view of the water and entrance to the nearby cove. The stones range from ones that must be about 2 kg to 40 kg. They're sandstone so they have flat surfaces and square angles but are rough to touch like used sandpaper. There's thick moss covering them too. The moss is dry from the summer heat so it feels like a thick shag carpet to the touch.

After a great day getting to be @cultarchaeo.bsky.social's assistant I'm still thinking about how almost 100 years ago there was a cult near by that started with a message of self improvement and bettering each other and descending into hate and paranoia.
A photo of a sign post on a hiking trail in the forest on DeCourcy Island. It reads "BROTHER XII TR." The sign is carved from wood and is simply nailed to a wood post in the ground. The lettering is carved about 0.5 cm deep and letters are about 5 cm in height. The sign is about 50 cm wide in total. The post it's nailed to is about 15 cm square and stands about 180 cm high. The sign is painted brown and the lettering white using a weather resistant outdoor paint. The paint is beginning to peel giving portions of the sign feeling smooth in texture with folds of bumpy peeling paint and rough wood grain in others. The brown paint was warm to the touch due to it being in the summer sun and the dark colour soaking up the heat.

Ooh, visiting Eastend, Saskatchewan and the highlight for me is these incredibly well restored F-units sitting right here in town. There's three, *three* of them! And a booster assist! And a ton of stock!

Here in Eastend, Saskatchewan it is incredible learning about all the 🧪 science and discovery that has happened here. Today was about Jack Wilkinson who began building telescopes from scratch and pursuing astronomy as a hobby. He eventually built the town's observatory that's still here to this day.

A massive treat about being here in Saskatchewan right now is getting to experience Dino Days in Eastend. The T. rex Centre here gave a showing of the last Jurassic World movie. Being here for this and you better believe I bought the t-shirt.

It's been given the nickname "Scotty". The tee-shirt is plain cotton but that good lighter, soft cotton. the tee has a graphic of a T. rex skeleton with "SCOTTY" in bold lettering above it and "WORLD'S LARGEST T. REX" below.
