When wanting to safely cycle to work gets really out of hand.

Stockport and Manchester.

Five years between these two images, but you'd think we'd gone back sixty years.

You CANNOT build new roads to solve congestion. Induced demand has been understood for decades. And you only need to look at the impact of the A555 to see how much worse it's increased traffic.

The draft GM 2050 Transport Strategy is out. It's 272 pages so forgive the focus on one detail.

In the map of long-term transport priorities, two ancient road schemes just won't die. The A6–M60 bypass and, somehow, the Disley and High Lane Bypass, which has been dead 30 years.

Just two days of Google Alerts for 'Active Travel England'.

This is what we're up against. Any announcement that benefits cycling, no matter how minor, will be attacked by a broad sweep of the media. It gets absorbed by people unthinkingly, and frightens decision makers. #Motornormativity

That momentary excitement when an email arrives with this logo. Is it a client? The latest from ATE?

No, just another reminder from HMRC.

There's also an entrance at Etchells Rd. It’s narrow, and because the path has a dogleg, it’s another route you might want to avoid at night. But it's fixable.

The council originally proposed a short section of cycle track along Etchells Rd to link to Bruntwood Lane. This scheme needs to keep it.

It’s currently possible to cycle into the car park from the existing route. It can get busy and there are speed bumps, but there are much worse cycling routes in Stockport.
November 9, 2025 at 1:16 PM
First, there’s no obvious need for a new route. The proposed lighting and width upgrades could happily be done to the existing shared path for less cost and impact on the green space. The road from Schools Hill to Bruntwood Hall is also considerably less busy than Bruntwood Lane, so why avoid it?
November 9, 2025 at 1:14 PM
The section in question runs from near the Cheadle Royal petrol station to Etchells Road. “Due to changing conditions and delivery constraints”, the council now wants to build a new route through Bruntwood Park, linking to the existing route on Bruntwood Lane.

But this route already exists.

Back in 2020, Stockport Council consulted on a walking and cycling scheme along (or occasionally parallel to) the A34. It was a mixed bag, but local campaigners supported it with several caveats.

It’s back for another consultation – because part of the scheme is being dropped.
