Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like if Congress' paychecks during a shutdown went to federal employees or to assistance programs, we wouldn't have as many shutdowns.

When you look at the list of institutions they want to defund: libraries, museums, the Smithsonian, public schools, PBS, NPR, archives, you can clearly see that the real threat to an authoritarian regime is an informed and educated public

Public libraries are one of the bastions of free and equal access to information. They're also vehemently anti censorship.
They scare authoritarians. It's easier to control an ignorant populace who only has access to what is deemed "correct".
If someone wants to defund libraries, don't trust them.

The one thing the convicted felon President should be doing is making it so that employers and rentals can't deny felons who have only nonviolent and nonsexual convictions.
I mean, it's pretty ironic he can be in the White House while he wouldn't be hired at or allowed to live in many places.
