Irish Culture and Partition, 1920-1955 (Liverpool University Press, April 2026)
Pinned
Very happy with this cover for ‘Irish Culture and Partition, 1920-1955’, which features a detail from Evie Hone’s stained glass window 'Four Green Fields'. This window was originally shown at the New York's World Fair in 1939, but is now found in Government Buildings on Merrion Street

This is the "mature debate" they keep banging on about btw. What level of cruelty we should aspire to, with the claimed fear of being seen as less cruel than a country rapidly sliding towards fascism. An ivory tower scumbag
Justice and Migration Minister Jim O'Callaghan said he's committed to ensuring Ireland is 'not viewed more favourably than the UK by those seeking to claim asylum'.

His statement comes following proposed reforms to the UK's asylum practices

we should really rebrand Irish unity as 'the singularity'

A question for certain people on the left: how exactly did you think rehabilitating that bald shitstain just because he was on the flotilla would end? Like, what was the expected outcome here?

Look forward to seeing all of the people writing op-eds about Heather Humphreys' election campaign, the Irish language, and the Orange Order criticise Little-Pengelly for this
DUP Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly has turned down an invitation to attend Catherine Connolly’s inauguration as Irish president.

It will be the first time since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement that a serving first or deputy first minister has not attended.

Or indeed of a law that requires the Head of State to be of a specific religion, as is the case in the UK. We should, of course, fight for a United Ireland that is free of sectarianism and grounded in equality, but let's not hold real existing unionism to a lower standard than aspirations for a UI.

meanwhile if anyone hears of any plans to implement housing, job, or electoral discrimination in the event of a United Ireland, or the introduction of emergency laws to curb unionist agitation, let alone pogroms, collusion, etc. Just let me know so I can organise a campaign against it

the context of 1948: a statelet in which the Orange Order were indistinguishable from the ruling party. The rest of the article is actually characteristic of the patronising attitude that southern intellectuals had towards the six county minority who have been curiously absent in recent discussions
In 1948 Seán Ó Faoláin wrote about the partition of Ireland.

t really is quite the thing to see so many people who have no interest in a United Ireland say that this campaign has set back a United Ireland - including the losing candidate. I would have to wonder if any election in the six counties would be held to the same standard about the union

Next on our reading list is For and Against a United Ireland by journalists Fintan O’Toole and Sam McBride. The prospect of Irish unification is now stronger than ever since partition in 1921.

Soldier F found not guilty of murder on Bloody Sunday. What can one expect when the British state doesn’t adequately investigate at the time, blames the dead for their murders, drags out justice processes for >50 years and then imposes a legacy act. Ensures this outcome www.rte.ie/news/ulster/...
Soldier F cleared of two murders on Bloody Sunday
A former British paratrooper has been found not guilty at Belfast Crown Court of committing two murders and five attempted murders on Bloody Sunday in Derry in 1972.
