there is more to the story, as you'll find out if you read the book. No pressure. Up the Celts.

it took me a very long time to trace a decent image of it, not the least because I am a terrible photographer. But here it is, in April 2024, and also in the background of Bertie Ahern's resignation as Taoiseach in May 2007

I sort of think you are conflating people who are from the six counties before partition with people who actually lived in the epoch of partition there. But also quite interesting to see 'southern' attitudes charactised as a reductive term up and until they refer to the Orange Order

Wouldn't know anything about partition myself at all. But as it happens both you mention - O'F and Cruiser - took several different positions on it over course of their lives so actually fairly representative

We are talking about both, to be clear - very little moved on since with regards to northern nationalism which is a symptom of partition. O'F listening to Denis Ireland and WS Kerr at the time both of whom had their own failures - in that context and Blythe not all that new

I was referring to 6 county nationalists/Republicans - who don't seem to count as much as the Orange Order when it comes to discussing a United Ireland for some reason. but O'F also rejecting Orange Terror here (as you'll know given that it's from the Capuchin archives)

Sorry if I wasn't clear before -Seán O'Faoláin is patronising six county nationalists and republicans in this article by making a United Ireland solely about the Orange Order.

Or indeed of a law that requires the Head of State to be of a specific religion, as is the case in the UK. We should, of course, fight for a United Ireland that is free of sectarianism and grounded in equality, but let's not hold real existing unionism to a lower standard than aspirations for a UI.
