Tourists on the Italian island of Sicily were forced to flee on Monday from the slopes of Mount Etna, one of Europe’s largest and most active volcanoes, after an eruption sent clouds of gas, rock and ash billowing into the sky.

Until vampires show up in “Sinners,” the film plays as a work of minutely observed historical fiction and “develops a richly delineated dramatic ethnography of Black life in the age of Jim Crow,” @tnyfrontrow.bsky.social writes.
“Sinners” Is a Virtuosic Fusion of Historical Realism and Horror
Ryan Coogler’s vampire movie mines vampirism’s symbolic potential to tell a tale of exploitation and Black music in nineteen-thirties Mississippi.

Perhaps the most depressing part about the last couple of months is that every awful shitty thing that’s happening to this country is self-induced. People asked for this. None of it had to happen.

one of the things i truly believe is that a significant portion of this country is in the grip of a death cult
"The vaccination has stuff we don't trust," said the father of the 6-year-old girl who died from measles at the end of last month. Tom Bartlett visited with a family confronting an unthinkable tragedy:

On the plane yesterday, sat next to a European couple living in the US, and the topic of whether they were thinking of returning to Europe came up. One of them noted they felt safer here because "you have oceans." But the general agreement was that right now there's probably nowhere truly safe.

There's no unemployment if we fire everyone at BLS!
It seems almost unavoidable at this point that we are headed for a deep, deep recession. Just based on 200K+ federal firings & pullback of contracts, the March employment report (to be released April 4) seems certain to show bigger job losses than any month ever outside of a few in 2008-9 and 2020.
