It's 2004. We're ~3 months into my freshman year of college. GWB has just won reelection, in no small part due to fearmongering over gay marriage. I find a gay classmate sobbing in the stairwell about "why do people hate me so much?"
It's 2015. 11 years later. Gay marriage is legal nationwide.

This is extremely true. I was in the closet until I was 32 because I was born in 1984 and lived and grew up in a "sundown town" level conservative small town in Kansas. Like, if I had come out as trans while there, there is a high probability they'd have never found my body.

TBH, I do think everyone under like 28-30ish genuinely does not understand how bad things used to be or how quickly progress was made over a very short period of time.
