I think an overlooked factor in how 'defense of democracy' failed to resonate as a talking point is its association with War on Terror/Iraq.

we have a president with a tenuous grip on small legislative majorities who is out of the gate with a flurry of dramatically unpopular orders and who has just demonstrated his weakness on the international stage. if i were an elected member of his domestic opposition, i might try to draw real blood.

Trump's Border Czar Tom Homan isn't just anti-immigration - he shares conspiracies with the Christchurch and Buffalo mass shooters. He think's that the Democrats really do want to replace white people in America.

Pretty neat how Trump is promising to hit us with a $300 billion tax increase next week (his taxes on imports from Canada and Mexico). This will be the largest tax increase on working people ever! That's pretty MAGA.

The countless small choices made every day inside newsrooms to do things like describe clear violations of the black-letter text of the law as "legally murky" add up to a very meaningful part of what's happened since 2017 and will continue to happen for the next four years.
Trump fires at least 12 inspectors general overnight in legally murky move
A senior administration official said the move was an effort to let go of parts of the Biden administration that don’t “align” with the Trump administration.

Unsure how to go viral? Here’s a way: your opponents apparently sent rape threats or something similarly vile to a young Republican woman for testifying under oath about Jan 6. Demand the messages and, if they are as described, insist everyone who participated be expelled. bsky.app/profile/bria...
This is crazy making. It also speaks to a deeper fear I have. Dems will only get comfortable trying to garner attention if they can do it in corny, non-confrontational ways. They went viral calling Republicans weird. It was great! But they couldn’t stand the heat and pulled the plug within days.

Julie Gray, wife of Holocaust survivor Gidon Lev, who joined Musk in his visit to Auschwitz speaks out. She says that Musk felt nothing during the tour & only "cared about how he looked."

She shared this with me privately shortly after the tour, and I'm grateful she made her thoughts public.

The anti-DEI tip line is a good example of how you try to implement a fascist agenda without state capacity. You rely on the enthusiastic participation of petty tyrants, backstabbers, abusers and malcontents.

AOC: I don’t care what Elon Musk is doing behind the presidential seal, but in this country we hate Nazis. Kind of like a foundational defining thing. Two of the foundational things about American history is that we beat the confederates and we beat the Nazis.

This is honestly what fucked us, I think: too many lawyers in the DoJ and DNC who wanted to Win The Argument with their perfect case, rather than realizing the political urgency and acting accordingly.
I’m going to assume you’re not a lawyer and you have no idea how long careful investigation and prosecution takes.

The "he's not gonna listen to her" reactions are missing many points. Lots of other people are also hearing it. Lots of people can see him hearing it, then weigh what she's said with what he'll do. Lots of people can see her refusal to surrender these ancient teachings to the latest face of empire
Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde to Trump: "I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender people in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives ... and the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals"
