Dominant European and North American political narrative is protection - of agricultural subsidies, steel or manufacturing jobs generally, foreign tech companies or foreigners generally. That's not a recipe for growth or reduced costs of living.

A pilot friend always says to me: "Yes, we are very well paid. And, if everything goes as it should, we do hardly any work. But then there there is that once-a-decade trip, when we earn a whole career's worth of salaries in ten minutes."

If right wing politicians say to one audience “mass deportation based on income/contribution” then claim to another more moderate audience “no I only want to deport criminals”, and journalists (or the Labour government) don’t call them on it, no wonder voters don’t know what’s being proposed.
