Fun fact - it’s possible for local WI branches to simply go independent and then they can have whatever membership rules they want. Lots of other advantages too. Would send a real message to Women’s Institute where your branch stands and you wouldn’t have to chuck out your trans members. Win-win

Section 28 didn’t come out of nowhere.
It came from a society where 75% thought homosexuality was wrong.
From a society that feared the sight of a man in drag would corrupt.
From a society that believed ignorance was better for children than any knowledge of gay lives.

Trans rights are a feminist issue and always have been. Trans people are at the sharp edge of the patriarchy but how they are treated affects *all* of us in the end
To get one thing straight, as I think will be coming clear to people in the UK this morning, that Supreme court decision doesn't just disadvantage women who are trans, it also disadvantages *all* women. We can now be questioned as to our gender, wherever, by whoever. Probably in whatever way.

And I’m back.

Went to the USA for a long weekend. Deleted Bluesky for the duration as a precautionary measure, as it’s my only really political online space. It was probably unnecessary (going through JFK anyway). NY was a lovely place full of lovely people (much more friendly than London! 😆)

Just got round to listening to this - one of my favourite books that I’ve read many times at different times of my life. It’s a comfort read now. So it’s really interesting to hear it more objectively pulled apart. Well worth a listen.

They’re pretty harsh about it! Lots of very valid critique…

GNU Terry Pratchett. The kid has moved on to the ‘grown up’ Discworld books so I’ve been experiencing them through the eyes of a 12 year old again. It’s been a wonderful experience. I finally managed to read The Shepherds Crown after reading through all the Witches books together.

I hate to say it but increasing defence spending is probably an unavoidable necessity in this new epoch. It’s deeply depressing to see it taken from international development though, and just totes up trouble for later while weakening the UKs influence even more
