TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

Every dollar JK Rowling makes from Harry Potter is going into bankrolling an extortion racket issuing legal threats to organizations across the UK to purge themselves of trans people or face ruinous lawfare.
i hope every single person who still buys harry potter merch or engages with that franchise is happy that they're literally making girl guides cry

girl guides uk have been forced very much against their will to exclude trans girls. full statement is here: www.girlguiding.org.uk/information-...

People on the left should not celebrate vile reactionaries on the rare moments you happen to agree with them about something.

More importantly, no one on the left should be agreeing with these reactionary narratives about the urgent defense of "Western civilization".

Today I learned that stalking a 17 year old girl, writing up a 400 page 'dossier' about her, falsely reporting her to the police and smashing her phone does not constitute 'harassment'.

One wonders what *would*.

Visits to minor tourist attractions in England always hit better when the only loos are in a small outside building with a warning label above the light switch which says "DANGER - ASBESTOS - DO NOT DRILL"

Mahmood wants to appeal to an (imagined) history of the UK being open and welcoming to refugees fleeing persecution while also saying that there are just too many asylum seekers these days because of our "increasingly mobile and volatile world" so we have to go for hard borders.

Reminder that temporary status for many refugees was already introduced under the Nationality and Borders Act 2022 and then reversed. These proposals from the Labour government are re-heated hostility which has been extensively proven not to work. Labour remain Reform's most useful idiots.

Even if Trans Rights was a "Losing Issue" (it's not), I think Human Rights are actually something worth standing up for and if you start deciding whose dignity isn't popular enough to defend, you're playing the Fascist Game and are a piece of shit.

The pandemic was a mass-disabling event and one of the reasons it has largely vanished from day to day political discourse is that those in power don't want to acknowledge the long term care needs it produced.
