A selfie postcard I made in the early 1980s. Almost endearing in the way I keep repeating what I evidently think is my best angle.

In postwar Italy, the decisive moment was most often one of contrasts—between the wrinkled faces of the agrarian past and the well-tailored suits of Italy’s economic boom, between nostalgia for the Old World and the awareness that, frankly, it really wasn’t so nice.
The Photographer Who Looked Past the Idea of Italy
Gianni Berengo Gardin spent a lifetime revealing the real people, real ironies, and real beauty of a country that people only think they know.

Age verification?
I’ve watched reruns of George Reeves as Superman on a black and white TV set whose valves took minutes to heat up.
Age verification?
I’ve sent faxes. Hell, I’ve sent telegrams. I remember what Poste Restante means.
Age verification?

I’ve made calls from a rotary phone.

I expect there’s a special circle in hell for anyone responsible for the awful partial enclosure trend in hotels shower stalls, where you feel cold drafts when showering and afterwards has to deal with an inundated bathroom floor.

"We forget that coherence is structure, not intention—projecting selfhood onto systems that never had a ghost in the machine, and perhaps forgetting that we never did either."
The Self That Never Was
We may be approaching a time when the illusion of selfhood is strengthened, not weakened, because we are surrounded by machines enacting it.
