Demolishing the East Wing of the White House before finalizing plans for what will be built above its ruins is a near-perfect metaphor for Trump's approach to economic policy. The only difference is the wrecking crew doesn’t claim the rubble is evidence of unprecedented growth.

Well, when you put it like that.
I still can't believe these goddamn fools are trying to get into a patriotism dick measuring contest with a guy who was a combat pilot and an astronaut and space flight commander.

As an author, I don't make a whole lot of money, but at the same time I need to read a lot of books to stay aware of trends and support my fellow authors. Obviously if I spend all my profits on other people's books, I'm not coming out ahead!

So: ways to read lots of indie books for cheap.

I’m betting Halligan will need this explained to her.

Some days I need this more than others.
A reminder that writing books is hard, and if you find it difficult, it’s not because you’re bad at it, it’s because it’s hard.

Before the midterms of 1866, President Andrew Johnson called his congressional opponents traitors and said they should be hanged.

Voters were so profoundly moved by his words... that they gave his opponents a supermajority in Congress, and the nation got the Fourteenth Amendment.

It’s not a sexy political topic, but it’s so important and underreported.
A House panel is holding a hearing on a proposed ban on Congressional stock trading.

This ban is long overdue. Why should members of Congress be able to use privileged information to make money on the stock market, while they’re supposed to be working for you?

I will never forget having to edit Jamal’s final, posthumous piece for the Washington Post, after he was murdered.

He was calling for free expression in the Arab world. You can read it here :

Opinion | Jamal Khashoggi: What the Arab world needs most is free expression
The Arab world needs a modern version of the old transnational media so citizens can be informed about global events.

How much could one banana cost, Michael? Ten dollars?
It's not a foolproof plan but every political debate from now on should be a Normal Guy competition. Ask them to describe grocery shopping in detail. Talk about what it's like to have a friend

Ireland and Troy Parrott, why such a moment probably shouldn’t have been possible, and why it’s about so much more than a play-off

Why Troy Parrott’s magic moment meant more than the World Cup play-offs to Ireland
The plight of Heimer Hallgrimsson’s team after four games meant none of this should have possible for a country which lacks the talent pool of yesteryear

(🚨) With the Zohran Mamdani win in New York City, we can now say that Trump and his Republican Party won a total of ZERO of the major candidate races on Election Day 2025.

It was an utter blowout.

(Some ballot issues, including a key one in California, have not reported any votes yet.)

6 billion! They have 6 billion dollars they can spend on this! Our government is suspended, and the uber-wealthy are adding to their hoard.
I wish they said explicitly that there's $5 billion in emergency reserves they're refusing to use instead they're happy to let people - mostly children, the disabled, and elderly, starve.
