Economist @joshgans.bsky.social uses o1-pro to generate a (minor, fun) paper in an hour based on an idea of his, and it gets published in an appropriate peer reviewed journal, with adequate disclosure.

Researchers used AI to generate 288 complete academic finance papers predicting stock returns, complete with plausible theoretical frameworks & citations. Each paper looks and reads as legit.

Universities do not exist to 'train', produce 'skills' or generate 'impact'. They exist to create new knowledge and teach about it. Any assertion to the contrary is in error, and is destroying everything it touches.

Maybe it's a collective nightmare and we will wake up and laugh at how wild and terrifying it was. Because surely we aren't witnessing a demolition of higher education across multiple countries, right? ...RIGHT?

Maybe something about the centrality of the educational mandate of University? Going beyond preparing people to do a job? 🤪 I don't know, I wasn't there. I must be hearing voices...
So what's the role of the institution? Offer resources, assure quality of learning experience, support and build networks. (I feel like there's a hidden message about what institutions currently do, but not sure what it is ... something to do with job cut and VC pay maybe?)
