The American people made a Faustian bargain—deporting their neighbors, condemning women to unnecessary deaths, killing tens of millions abroad—for a good economy. If they actually get one they will do this over and over again. They must learn that when the lowest among us suffer, we all do.
I don’t want suffering to happen — minimizing suffering is literally the basis of my entire worldview — but I also think the only way this country really turns on fascism at this point is if there’s mass suffering.
