Old enough that one of my early memories is of my mother listening anxiously to the Joe McCarthy hearings on the radio.
This will certainly be worthwhile. See you there!

From 2005 to 2012, one CBP officer or agent was arrested for corruption, crimes, or misconduct EVERY SINGLE DAY. By 2019, it had slowed to just one every 35 hours. Still a huge problem:
“A U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent allegedly used his gun and badge to force his way into hotel rooms and rob and sexually assault at least four prostitutes in Chicago’s suburbs in 2022, according to federal charges made public Tuesday.”

It’s weird that news organizations like the BBC are covering this as if it’s a real thing with a real process behind it—and not clearly some nakedly invented “participation trophy” by a corrupt organization to curry favor with a corrupt and easily manipulated man-child. www.bbc.com/sport/footba...

Pax Christi USA national council member Josephine Garnem reflects on the dire need today for political leaders who recognize that power is not merely to be wielded but harnessed for service, for the protection of those who are marginalized, and for the pursuit of justice and peace.
Time to reclaim politics as a force for the common good
By Josephine GarnemPax Christi USA National Council Global consciousness is shifting, and with it comes an urgent call to reclaim politics as a force for the common good. What should be the norm — ethical leadership, service to those who are vulnerable, and stewardship of justice and peace — has too often been replaced by corrosive trends that threaten the very fabric of our societies.

So true!
Like the cruelty, the hypocrisy is the point. "Free speech" crusaders lining up behind state censorship. "Small gov" advocates orgasming over the federal invasion of states. I can't think of a 3rd example because there are too many many. The brazenness has cooked my brain. As it was designed to.

We have existing narrative for big hero with the gun.

We do not have very well engrained narrative in US for "Quiet community work making incremental changes and passing baton to next person to keep going after you die."

We've made the first one sound glamorous. The second one sounds like WORK 😆
Everyone wants to be the hero with the crossbow and fallout shelter, no one wants to be one of many uncredited community members doing the inconvenient work of daily civic engagement 🫠

Today, September 2nd, is the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the surrender ceremonies on the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. As we remember the end of that horrific war, I wrestled with the question I've gotten more than any other on my book tour. www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/were-the-a...
Were the atomic bombings necessary?
Today's 80th anniversary of the end of World War II revives a long-standing debate.

In response to the horrific shooting in Minneapolis on Wednesday, the Pax Christi USA Gun Violence Prevention working group reiterates that our country must prioritize children over guns.
Statement: Our country must prioritize children over guns
The following statement is offered by the Pax Christi USA Gun Violence Prevention Working Group. August 29, 2025 Our faith tells us that every life is sacred. But the lives of children seem particularly blessed given the incredible potential that resides in each beautiful soul. This is one of the many reasons why the indiscriminate and horrific shooting of the children and adults at the Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis on August 27 is so devastating…

Part of what frustrates me greatly right now is the idea that a better world is possible — and other countries are getting there! — and the US is increasingly just choosing not to be better.
“Over the past 20 years, Paris has undergone a major physical transformation, trading automotive arteries for bike lanes, adding green spaces and eliminating 50,000 parking spaces.

Part of the payoff has been invisible — in the air itself.”

Leadership, strategy, real action, common sense. #Paris
Paris said au revoir to cars. Air pollution maps reveal a dramatic change.
Air pollution fell substantially as the city restricted car traffic and made way for parks and bike lanes.

But it is the guns. Metal detectors and perimeter controls aren’t going to stop an armed maniac from shooting kids. Just like common sense won’t stop a Fox maniac from shooting his mouth.

But now, Trump has taken that to a new level, becoming the manifestation of an oppressive state that the right has always warned against. So why aren't more sounding the alarm?
