This hand wringing over “river to the sea” which is just about a one state solution without apartheid is TELLING. It’s the same argument that “nice Northern” people made about ending slavery- they were for it but if everyone was equal what would those barbarians do???

In the meantime, I'll stay on Twitter and for anyone who comes across this post in the void I'll recommend the episodes re:Palestine from the Ethnically Ambiguous podcast plus decolonizepalestine.com and BDS to get informed

But I shouldn't have expected anything with how Germany never fully learned from the past g*nocides it perpetrated - how can I expect left leaning media to actually grasp the current one?
Plus the right wing movement is getting so big it further dilutes any meaningful discussion
Tried to follow more German media on Bluesky but the news coverage is way too ahistorical, racist and islamophobic fore to not get angry at. Didn't think it was still this bad.

Incredible to me that someone can live through the last 20 years and still think that indiscriminately bombing a population is a plausible way to defeat terrorism.

really telling that the default solution proposed here is to drop bombs in pursuit of no particular strategic objective until such a time as an objective occurs to the people with bombs
No one has a plan for how a ceasefire that leaves Hamas in charge of Gaza gets to peace and a Palestinian state.
Some propose ending the blockade, rewarding Hamas’s attack by enabling bigger and faster rearming.
Some simply assume Hamas away and imagine a better future.
How to get there from here?

The invasion of Gaza has begun according to the IDF. Keep the people of Gaza in your thoughts or prayers if you do those. They need it.

This isn't nearly forceful enough but it's the best I can do right now. The idea that random civilians in Gaza share some kind of collective responsibility for Hamas, or that it could be just to collectively punish them, is *impossible to reconcile* with our best moral and intellectual traditions
Collective Punishment is Illiberal
It simply can't be squared with the tradition

as a quickly-approaching-40-year-old person, one of the saddest trends I see is the assumption that the Middle East™ is naturally a hotbed of religious conservatism when a closer look almost always reveals a peaceful, often socialist alternative kneecapped by the US govt bc the prior was preferable
As a historian, I cannot help pointing out that, once upon a time, in 2008 to be precise, it was possible for Vanity Fair to publish a lengthy exposé on US government involvement in the horrible mess that brought Hamas to power in Gaza. archive.vanityfair.com/article/2008...
