This is also why you see such fierce opposition to First Nations-developed housing projects, such as the new housing in Vancouver (Kitsilano)—communities providing affordable housing in desirable locations sets a very bad precedent in the eyes of landlords, developers, and venture capitalists.

Treating housing like a commodity and a source of income is why the real estate market is absolutely bonkers in BC.

Landlords and their developer buddies have made this province nearly impossible to buy a house in if you are a young person with no family help or generational wealth.

Personally, I don’t feel bad about a bunch of settlers who got rich off of speculating in the real estate market and gouging their tenants having to potentially pay up more money to the First Nations whose land their ancestors stole so they could further leech off of people.

When I gave a colloquium talk at MUN in 2023, I got to meet the Indigenous faculty and students at the First Peoples’ centre—very great community. It’s disappointing that MUN’s president hasn’t been able to learn about Indigenization from them.
