A couple good reminders about my Bluesky posts:

1. My posts reflect my own views and do not represent the views of my employer, or any organizations I represent.

2. I sometimes am wrong. I am not perfect—after all, I willingly cheer for Minnesota sports teams.

3. Land Back.
The fact that there are people who were mad about neighbourhood corner stores, in Toronto of all places, is extremely funny to me.

I live in one of the more stuffy neighbourhoods in Victoria and we have *several* corner stores.
The neighbourhood retail report as amended CARRIES 23-2.

Toronto Council votes to permit corner stores in all Old Toronto & East York wards, and expands permission for retail on some (but not all) major streets city-wide.

I don't know about you, but for how much MAGA folks yell about Trump not being a pedophile, I'm wondering about the fact that he sure did spend a lot of time around people who ARE known pedophiles.

Geography nerd moment: It is only 25 miles as the crow flies from Swartz Bay terminal (near Victoria) to Tsawwassen terminal (Vancouver), and the ferry route itself is only about 29 miles in length--but it feels like a whole other world away. Maybe it's just the 90-minute ferry ride that does it.

Today, I gave a guest lecture at Chapman University on Indigenous cultural resource management, where I got to indulge in one of my favourite things in academia: dunking on Elizabeth Weiss.

Imagine getting mad that you can't just do whatever you want with Indigenous remains. 😆

I've gotten a lot of questions over the past few years about how to pronounce my Ojibwe name, Niiyokamigaabaw (Stands On Four Earths) — I've recorded a short video explaining how to pronounce it! Enjoy!

Get vaccinated!

Vaccines are safe, researched, and will protect you from serious health complications!

I booked my appointment a couple of weeks ago and will be looking forward to getting my COVID booster and flu jabs next week here in BC!
💉Flu season is here!

Get your flu vaccine, especially if you have underlying medical conditions. This goes for kids too. Last year, 280 kids died from influenza: 56% of them had an underlying condition and 89% were unvaccinated.

The ability of bad actors to derail any classroom curriculum they don't like is getting out of hand in the United States. Why would a student get offended over a graphic that describes structures of white supremacy? Is this another case of 'hit dogs holler'?

In the Spring, I'll be teaching two courses at Bemidji State University — Introduction to Turtle Island (a 1st-year course) and Indigenous Nation Building and Leadership (a 4th-year course). I'd love to bring in a few Indigenous guest lecturers!

Let me know if you're interested!

That's another journal manuscript submitted..I don't know if having a year as productive as 2025 will be sustainable for me over the long term, or even the medium or short term.

Still, it feels very nice to keep articles moving through the pipeline and hopefully into publication!

Starting with my first book, "Tales of an Indigenous Geographer", which is tentatively set for release in March/April 2026!

The best investment I make every year--a Moleskine planner, because I am schedule-challenged without a physical or digital calendar to lean on.

The second best investment--a healthy supply of correction tape dispensers, because schedules have that really annoying habit of changing quite often. 😆

URGENT CALL TO ACTION:

PORTLAND, ICE IS TRYING TO KIDNAP AND ABDUCT PEOPLE OUTSIDE SCHOOLS IN SAINT JOHNS NEIGHBORHOOD

The schools are on lockdown. They are asking for people to show up, cameras ready — also ready to be an " eye witness to a kiddo or family getting safely into their vehicle."

I'm supposed to be flying to Texas later this month, and then on to Ohio, and back to Victoria. I am increasingly wondering if that trip is going to happen.
