A (pathologically kind) maker of dated references that moonlights as a video essayist/podcaster when he isn't editing other peoples videos/podcasts.

In other news, I'm off to go edit a one hour podcast where a couple of lawyers praise AI and had a one minute aside where they rip on people who still seek out physical media/VHS tapes 🙂

If only they knew one of those freaks are editing their show.

Misc thoughts from watching Back to the Future III tonight

Another detail I picked up seeing Back to the Future in IMAX last week was that Doc uses his blinker when he’s using the flying circuits at the end of the movie and tries to do a U turn. I can’t help but find the specificity of that really funny lol

So tonight/tomorrow is the four year anniversary of my best friend dying in a car accident and, because the trilogy was something like the Rosetta Stone for our friendship, I’m watching BTTF II tonight

Cool detail I noticed.

Are The Mets really about to let Cincinnati keep us out of the Wild Card? Come on, guys! Remember 1986! Be the Bad Guys again! Take speed before a game, trash an airplane, charge the mound, do something!

Ffs, their mascot looks like the Waluigi to our Mr. Met!

Tried watching the new @taylorlorenz.bsky.social on Spotify vs YouTube (mostly because I'm about to head out and it's more convenient for when I have to switch to audio only) and good lord does their video UX make zero sense. They cover the bottom of the screen with Comments/Chapters bars lol

ICYMI: I just released a podcast episode all about 1995’s Rumble in the Bronx, the Jackie Chan movie that brought the kung fu (or Karate Kid, if you want to get SEO optimized 😉) legend to America!

Oh, the disappointment of having to take a thumbnail I genuinely love, and having to throw text on it to try and salvage an under performing video :(

Anyway, I made a video essay about the Mission: Impossible series and how you can use it to gloss through 30 years of history.

Last we have Supercop.

This one kinda makes sense? It’s clearly trying to evoke the helicopter stunt from the end of it but uses attack helicopters for some reason and has weird perspective issues. How is Jackie kicking up like that if the helicopter is ascending (note the background)?

Project A and Project A 2

This one just makes me laugh because wtf, man. The art is just plain lazy at this point (especially Project A 2)

And kudos on using a photo of Sammo Hung… but why is he 20 years older than he is in the movie! So is Jackie, but it’s not as noticeable!

For Operation Condor we get… idk man.

We once again have two models that aren’t in the movie, though there is an Asian sidekick and a blonde one in the film.

These characters however bare no resemblance to them in appearance/personality, and the movie isn’t about spies. It’s an Indiana Jones riff.

Armor of God

This one is whatever.

First, hi black shirt!

Second, it’s wrong because it implies the climax takes place at a castle when it was more of a cult cavern system.

Third, there’s zero mention of the co-lead Alan Tam (who Americans wouldn’t have recognized)

The Legend of the Drunken Master

I actually respect this one. Zero effort to capture anything from the movie. Just Jackie Chan punching through paper with a cartoonishly bad fist getting added in post. It’s basically that one Guy meme

The Accidental Spy

This movie… oof. But the poster is even crazier. First, what the heck is going on with Jackie’s hand! And why is his head so obviously photoshopped onto another body!

And the people behind them? None of them are in the movie. There aren’t even characters similar to them.

Twin Dragons:

Gets the basic idea right (there are two Jackie Chans, and one is a fighter while the other is a musician).

However, it gets the musician’s instrument wrong and the fighter’s clothes wrong.

That’s a pattern too, by the way. Jackie had a real thing for black t-shirts, apparently.

Endlessly tickled by the Miramax/Dimension Films artwork for Jackie Chan’s Hong Kong movies.

These things are hilarious for how poorly stitched together they are/they’re obviously sourced from a single photoshop.

Here’s a rundown of a bunch of them and what’s wrong in each of them.

Oop.

I think this also confirms that the $80 price tag for games was not in anticipation of tariffs. It was Nintendo knowing they could charge that much for Mario Kart (and they may charge more now)
