If we are banning cell phones for kids we need to be talking about banning chatbots for boomers

This is a since-deleted LinkedIn post from the marketing agency that created the since-deleted AI-generated McDonalds Christmas ad, and all I can think of is how the energy consumption must've been about on par with a small suburb or heavy industrial load to produce 30 seconds of slop everyone hated

It’s actually awful to pretend to bereaved parents and to worried parents that this “ban” will stop cyber bullying. As this article suggests, it won’t at all, and could just make it less easy to find and manage.

You don’t fix a social problem with a (badly designed) tech fix.
Australia’s social media ban won’t stop cyberbullying
A technical fix can’t solve a social problem.

ABC's kids news show BTN surveyed 17,000 9-16 year olds about the social media ban:

- 70% said they think it's a bad idea
- 72% said they don't think it'll work
- of those with social media accounts, 75% said they plan to keep using it
- 190 said they were 67 (6-7) years old

I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

Generative AI is this weird little ferret that is carrying a tall pole with a red flag at the top, and it roots out the worst pre-existing problems in society and plants a little slop-flag in them

eg: how companies have made scientific publishing into a for-profit low quality content mill
"Runctitiononal features"? "Medical fymblal"? "1 Tol Line storee"? This gets worse the longer you look at it. But it's got to be good, because it was published in Nature Scientific Reports last week: www.nature.com/articles/s41... h/t @asa.tsbalans.se

"chatbots are just like calculators therefore it's fine to allow them being crammed into every corner of education" is absurdly silly on a million levels, but the most simple imo is that people *actually use them as calculators* - delivering incorrect answers for many millions times the energy use
Chatbot energy scores are welcome - but don't forget the toxic context of AI overconsumption
Julien Delavande , an engineer at AI research firm Hugging Face , has developed a tool that shows in real time the power consumption of the chatbot generating your query, and presents that energy valu...

Waymo's success is remarkable proof of the power of AI. It's also remarkable proof of its limitations. Waymo's need for limited domains and powerful perception hardware, and the failure of Tesla's "AI-first" approach without them, holds powerful lessons about the limits of probabilistic inference.
It's fascinating to me that there's a whole "AI skeptic" misinformation ecosystem out there that somehow continues to deny that Waymo exists. Like, this is easy to fact check! Waymo runs publicly-available service in 5 cities, you can just go look up how it works and see it's not planned routes!

"I don't get to draw the line" — you are a wildly influential journalist with an audience of millions, you absolutely do get to draw the line!
IMO, the most revealing part is Klein wrestling with the question of where "the line" is (between acceptable and unacceptable politics). Realizing that what he considered past the line is now the GOP mainstream doesn't make him commit harder to fighting it. He wonders if he needs to move the line.

ChatGPT is probably the biggest honey pot of willingly-turned over highly confidential information that has ever been created in human history.
also, so many of these people are just taking company confidential, proprietary data and dumping it into public iterations of ChatGPT, which is so incredibly problematic on so many levels. Even on our internal approved tools I have to tell people to turn them off when discussing certain legal stuff!

Vertical rows are the agrivoltaic winner!

“The vertical panels produce slightly less electricity—but with higher value, as generation peaks coincide with morning and late afternoon demand…The crops don't seem to mind the presence of solar panels and they like the wind protection they provide.”
Double harvest: Vertical solar panels and crops thrive side by side
Imagine a field where solar panels and crops coexist—with no trade-off. It sounds like science fiction, but that's precisely what researchers from Aarhus University have now documented in a full-scale...

the people who create, amplify, advocate for disinformation do damage in many ways, including distracting people from the root cause

Eg - people fight against a wind farm on easily debunkable health claims, and put all their effort into it when they could be fighting the company for a massive $ cut

(how do we stop this disinformation)

when you should really ask a second

(how do we stop the sentiment that made these people seek out disinformation and accept it uncritically)
