NASA History Office: 30 years ago today, five STS-74 astronauts said farewell to the crew aboard the Mir space station after delivering a new docking module, solar arrays, and supplies.

Happy birthday to Alan B. Shepard, the first American astronaut to travel into space, born OTD in 1923. He is also famous for being the only one of the original seven Mercury astronauts to set foot on the moon and providing the classic Shepard's prayer: "Please, dear God, don't let me f*** up."

Skylab 4, the third and final Skylab space station crew, was launched #OTD in 1973. The crew were astronauts: Gerald P. Carr, Edward G. Gibson and William R. Pogue. The mission established a new record for the duration of a human spaceflight – 84 days, 1 hour and 15 minutes.

The Great Comet of 1680 was discovered #OTD by German astronomer Gottfried Kirch. It was the first comet discovered with a telescope. It had an unusually long tail and on Dec. 18, 1680, passed within just 930,000 km from the center of the Sun. Isaac Newton used it to test and verify Kepler's laws.

Mariner 9 entered orbit around Mars #OTD in 1971, becoming the first spacecraft to orbit another planet. The orbiter mapped 85% of the Martian surface and sent back 7,329 pictures, including images of Olympus Mons, Valles Marineris, and the moons Phobos and Deimos.

🚀 Recently, ATMOS and Space Cargo Unlimited announced that their first joint mission will fly aboard a Falcon 9 rocket in 2026.

The private mission will demonstrate the integration of SCU's BentoBox platform and ATMOS' PHOENIX 2 re-entry capsule.
