Must-read #NYBCI25 coverage by @neurotechnology.substack.com in @forbes.com.

My key takeaway on cognitive BCI: Our biggest limiting factor isn't tech—it's fundamental scientific understanding.

We can’t advance the tech until we define the disorder. Basic research must lead the way!
@mountsinainyc.bsky.social's #BrainComputerInterface Symposium has cemented itself as a must-attend for those interested in the nexus of brain health & implanted technologies. This is a MUST READ, in-depth summary of #NYBCI25 penned for @forbes.com by Naveen Rao 👉 www.forbes.com/sites/naveen...

The horrendous ads on the site that published this uninspired article are worse for people's privacy and well-being than any neurotech. But yes...neuroethics and neurorights *waves hands*

Which #neurotech #neuromodulation #bci practitioners can help me draw up a parallel R&D framework for the field?
There are 3 types of R&D:

Basic research: new knowledge, don’t yet have an intended purpose (e.g. observe a planet’s orbit)

Applied research: have an intended purpose (e.g. improve battery efficiency)

Development: make a vegan McRib

Applied research & development funding have seen bigger cuts.

Trump officials’ decision to prioritize autism comes amid a broader slowdown in NIH funding for other initiatives.

As of last week, NIH funding was lagging billions of dollars behind its traditional pace for research awards, including studies on cancer, heart disease, and mental health.
See this chart for one stark example: NIH funding has dramatically slowed down.

Grant awards are down *$3 billion* so far, compared to same time period last year

I asked the White House to explain.

“This is not a researcher entitlement program,” said an official, defending their new approach.

Every day new therapies are delayed, people suffer.

It's early, but after meeting many of the company's leaders, as well as a person in his second year of using the device, it seemed real to me.
