As much as I love that film, every time I see that scene, I can’t help thinking about how that species would get business done, like a sexier version of leg wrestling or getting kneed in the crotch.

These lessons have served me well, navigating media and recognizing bias. There are some programs and sources of news that I enjoy, but I definitely try to double-check things when something seems outrageous. I’m not sure people do that regularly or at all, but I highly recommend it.

One of things that helped me in my formative years was being on the school paper in high school which included a crash course in journalism. I learnt about research, verifying sources and all with a goal of impartiality. You’re there to inform, not editorialize.

Not only does it address the original story with true respect not seen in a lot of adaptations, but actually builds upon the characters and themes in meaningful ways.
