Very interesting thread and discussion in the comments
If you submit your papers to me at QME, I will tell you to ignore the part of the referee report that complains about results not being surprising.
A reviewer says to you, “your results are not surprising.”

What do you say back to them?

Agree with this even if I don't always follow it myself 🙈
A small but non-trivial hill I am willing to die on:

The abstract of every empirical paper should include the core empirical findings--numbers included!

Not "we find police reduce crime," but "we find that a 1% increase in police yields a 0.4% drop in crime."

The abstract isn't clickbait.

💯 oftentimes, the tables in your presentation shouldn't be exact replicas of the tables in your paper. You have more space on a page - no one will be able to read that same table on a presentation slide.

Even better, include figures over tables in your presentation slides.
On the same vein, I'd love it it if people realised they can make some modified figures for their talk rather than just screenshotting a paper figure in that is far to complicated for a 15 minute talk

Yes yes yes
Want to give a good scientific talk? TELL A GOOD STORY. don’t show the audience every result, don’t give us one slide on every paper you’ve ever published. If I want to read your resume, I will. Teach me something, tell me a story.

For those who don't have research funds, free LLM/AI tools like Claude, Perplexity, and ChatGPT are good alternatives.
Tip: Hiring a copyeditor is one of the best ways to spend your research money.
