Tonight, voters made history in the Commonwealth. For the first time, every statewide office will be held by leaders who refuse money from Virginia's monopoly utilities, marking a turning point for millions of Virginians who have long paid the price for political corruption and monopoly control.

China calls them the "New Three" -- solar panels, EVs, and batteries -- a set of technologies the country dominates.

But once, the US had a headstart.

New from me and @naemas.bsky.social on how the US lost its lead in clean energy -- and how China took over.

The U.S. invented these technologies. Then China dominated them.
China dominates the global market for clean energy technology like electric vehicles, batteries and solar panels, which were all invented in the U.S.

China is quickly becoming the world's first electro-state, while the US, under Republican rule, has decides to cede the future and double down on its role as a petro-state.
Sobering piece in @nytimes.com compares China's advances in clean energy to the U.S.'s retrenchment in fossil fuels. Hard to read at a moment when the U.S. is giving up on a more affordable, healthier, and more sustainable future.

Every single House Republican voted for Trump's Big Ugly Bill without even bothering to learn how terrible it is for their constituents.

Instead of doubling-down on House Republicans' historic mistake, the Senate must fix or stop this extreme bill and protect clean energy. #BillionaireTaxScam

The lawmakers said they're "deeply concerned" by some of the Trump agenda bill's provisions and called for changes to mitigate "significant disruption" to certain projects.

Make no mistake: the House budget bill, as currently written, is effectively a full repeal of the Inflation Reduction Act clean energy measures. This renders all IRA tax credits as-good-as-dead. Goodbye nuclear industry. Goodbye US manufacturing investments. Hello higher energy prices.

The clean energy transition is happening faster than we think, and it's crucial to understand how we’re getting there.

From wind to solar, the rise of renewables is gaining what we're calling "escape velocity" — a point where growth becomes unstoppable, even amid political and economic challenges.

Interesting research! Human beings are, by nature, extremely bad at noticing & appreciating the significance of gradual change over time. We notice binaries, on/offs, either/ors.

"Winter temperatures gradually rising." - no one cares

"Lake X used to freeze over; now it doesn't." - people notice
🚨 New in Nature Human Behavior! 🚨

Binary climate data visuals amplify perceived impact of climate change.

Both graphs in this image reflect equivalent climate change trends over time, yet people consistently perceive climate change as having a greater impact in the right plot than the left.

If China defeated the US in war and forced us to sign a treaty that would ensure a century of Chinese dominion in science and tech, they'd be smart to force the U.S. to:

- slash scientific grants in half
- reduce foreign students
- gut our manufacturing base

Instead, we're doing it all by choice.
