I’m glad Marisa mentioned this. In certain circles there is - correctly! - laser focus on this catastrophe but it can be hard to get the story through to people, in no small part because it’s so upsetting and bleak and enraging that some deep part of people shuts down and rejects it.
I think it’s worth noting this piece generated the most unsubscribes I’ve seen in a while, and the newsletter version had the lowest open rate in many months. These horrors persist in part because too many people go to great pains to avoid them.

Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive.

No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief.

This is authoritarianism in operation. Americans don't know what it looks like, but that's it. This is what it looks like.
Not sure if this has been shared here yet, but this is video of Rumeysa Ozturk's arrest posted by WCVB. It's terrifying.

@shannonbond.bsky.social due respect, the surreality of listening to you describe him doing the dictionary definition of a sieg heil, then somehow debate what it was (which he has NOT denied), and then talk about how that’s exactly what he wants you to do is disheartening to say the least
